However, get past that spooky logo and you'll notice that they are also actually pushing sales of their new G1 phone. Underneath the search box there is the text "New! The G1 phone is available now. Learn more."

It's the first mobile to run Google's Android technology (so it's a big deal) but it's definitely unusual for Google to promote the sales of a product from the main homepage. Google are clearly wanting to fight the battle against the iPhone and the new Blackberry touch and are willing to use one of their biggest tools to get the word out.
It's common for Google to use their homepage to promote the latest product they have (Google Earth, Maps, Streetview etc have all had the treatment) but I think it's the first time they've done it to directly drive sales to another site (you have to go to the T-Mobile site to buy the phone, and today that page is only 2 clicks away from the Google homepage).
It'll be interesting to see if Google choose to use their homepage for more commercial gains in the near future.
